REVIEW AND RELEASE BLAST - Love Story by Lauren Layne

LOVE STORY
a Love Unexpectedly novel

Lauren Layne

Releasing February 14th, 2017
Loveswept

Over the course of one wild road trip,
feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love.

Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

Although listed as a title in the Love Unexpectedly Series, all books in the series stand alone.

Second chance romances are my go to romantic dramas. There is always that question: will they or won't they take that second chance in falling back in love again? In most romance stories, the hero and heroine should (and will) get back together...but in some cases they may not. It all depends on their back story. The foundation of the story sets it all...it's how they proceed from there that determines their fate. Of course there will be ups and downs to any love story...question is how will they bounce back from their pit falls.

What I love most about second chances are the flash backs to their first chance at love. Lauren Layne definitely gives you some memorable moments...hot and heavy, soft and sweet, and a dash of fun and laughter. You can't help but fall in love with the characters from their beginning. Reece and Lucy have a tension you want to tug free. Will they or won't they act on their feelings? Who will they hurt in the process? Will they hurt each other? If so, is it worth hurting each other?

Love story will give you the feels and you will just simply want more. The protective nature given off by Reece makes you want to have a Reece in your life. Everyone needs a Reece in their life. Swoon-worthiness is ranked high for this one. Can't help but give you guys a little taste of the feels.

EXCERPT

“Spock, we’re giving you Horny!” my mom blurts out, apparently fed up with my denseness.
Her utterance is too much for my siblings to handle and they both burst out laughing, retreating into the kitchen to rejoin the party where there’s wine.
Oh what I wouldn’t give for wine right now.
“I, um . . . you’re giving me the car?” I ask.
“Because yours broke down,” my dad explains, walking forward to thump Horny’s dented hood.
“And this one’s . . . not broken down?” I ask skeptically.
Look, it’s not that I’m not grateful. My parents are trying to give me a car, I appreciate the sweetness of the gesture, it’s just . . .
Here’s the thing about Horny: he barely got us three kids through high school. I mean, Horny is the car that sputtered and shook making it the 3.2 miles to Jefferson High, no matter who was behind the wheel.
I’m even going to come all the way clean here and say that early on in my freshmen year, I was embarrassed showing up in Horny. Then I realized I was lucky to have a car at all, and well . . . I dunno, I guess Horny became a part of us Hawkins kids’ charm, because the station wagon was practically an institution from Craig’s high school reign all the way through Brandi’s.
But poor Horny quit working years ago. Much to Brandi’s chagrin, he gave up the ghost a mere two months before her high school graduation, and I spent the last bit of her senior year being picked up by my parents.
“He’s going to take you to California,” Dad says, giving the car another thump.
“Really?” I step forward and run a tentative finger along the familiar panel. He’s had a bath, so at least that’s something. “Because last I knew, he wouldn’t even make it out of the garage.”
“Yeah, well, we neglected him for a while, but he’s right as rain now,” Dad says, puffing out his chest as though Horny’s a fourth child.
“Like, as in he actually starts?”
“Purrs like a kitten,” my mom says with an emphatic nod, even though I know she doesn’t even like cats. “We didn’t believe it, but we took him to church on Sunday and there were no issues.”
I literally bite my tongue to keep from pointing out that this is hardly a feat. Sacred Presbyterian is 0.8 miles away from the house.
“You took Horny into a shop?” I ask, starting to warm to the idea of having a car again. I’m a little touched, actually. Money is tight for my parents. Dad’s a PE teacher, and Mom gives a mean winery tour, but the gig’s never paid much.
“Not exactly, it was more of a bartering situation,” Mom says.
“Yeah?” I say, going around to the driver’s seat, already giddy with the prospect of telling Oscar I’ll be able to come see him in Miami after all, even if I won’t exactly be riding in style.
“Reece agreed to fix him up.”
I’m lowering myself into the car as my dad says this, but I reverse so quickly I hit my head. My skull doesn’t even register the pain, because I’m too busy registering the hurt in my heart at the familiar name. “I’m sorry, what?”
“Reece,” my mom says, giving me a bemused look. “He’s always been handy with cars.”
“He fixed up the car in exchange for what?”
And then I feel—I actually feel—the air change around me as the side door to the garage opens, and a new presence sucks all the air out of the space.
I don’t turn around. I don’t move. But I feel his eyes on me. Over me.
“Reece is headed out to California too,” my oblivious mother chatters on. “It worked out perfectly actually. Now you two can ride together, and your dad and I don’t have to worry about you alone in the middle of nowhere with a twenty-something-year-old car.
They think the car is going to be the problem here? It’s not the car that’s toxic to me. It’s him.
Reece Sullivan. My brother’s best friend. My parents’ “other son.”
Slowly I force myself to turn, and even though I’m prepped, the force of that ice-blue gaze still does something dangerous to me.
He winks, quick and cocky, and I suck in a breath, and I have to wonder . . .
I wonder if my parents would feel differently about their little plan if they knew that their makeshift mechanic is the same guy that popped my cherry six years earlier under their very roof.
And then broke my heart twenty-four hours later.

It was meant to be the job opportunity of a life time.

It turned out to be so much more…

At the age of twenty five, Emma Lexington takes off to New York on a once in a life time twelve-month job exchange with the New York Warriors. Determined to make the most of the opportunity, she prepares herself for life in the big apple—fast paced, exciting and a whole lot of fun. What she hasn’t prepare for though, is meeting him.

The charming Will Jensen is in the prime of his playing career. As the star quarterback for the Warriors, his carefree, football centric life is thrown into disarray when he meets Emma, the beautiful, easy going Australian girl who joins the Warriors staff.

Unwilling to throw her professional reputation away on a fling with the playboy quarterback, Emma turns down Will’s advances, even though she can’t deny the attraction she feels for him. Their pull toward one another grows, but it takes a near disaster for Emma to finally give Will a chance.

Getting together might have been hard, but figuring out how to stay together will prove even more challenging as Emma must decide between conflicting loyalties.

Lexington and 42nd is a fun, sexy romance, set in the exciting world of the NFL in the fabulous city of New York.

A new swoon-worthy romance from debut author, Kim Carody! I’ve had my fair share of sports romances and when a new author comes along…it can be quite refreshing. I have a number of favorite authors in the sports genre and after reading Lexington and 42nd, Carody will be a new addition to the list. :)

Will Jensen is at the top of his game in the NFL. After catching women off guard with his good looks, charming personality, and sexy moves over the years, there is one woman who captures his attention. A woman who is quite forbidden. Will he be able to stay away and focus on his game?

Emma Lexington arrived in NYC to build a relationship between two companies. Her plan for the year is to enjoy the sights and focus on her career. When a man comes into her line of sight, a man who is quite forbidden, will she be able to stay away from his advances and save her career?

Thoughts:
PLOT LINE - There is such a great flow throughout the book. The transition from how they met and building their professional dynamic to becoming friends and having it turn into something more is so smooth. The whole time, you may be thinking: when is it going to happen?! I love how there is sort of a forbidden romance. It is acceptable in some companies as long as it doesn’t get the way of your performance. Consequences can occur when the star player gets distracted, especially by a new member on the PR team. It can be risky! Are they both willing to take the risk? If they take that risk, how will they keep it hidden?

CHEMISTRY – From the moment they met, you can tell there will be a lot of steam. With the instant attraction between the two, his constant teasing and flirty advances clashing with her efforts to avoid him, there is a magnetic pull always bringing them together. The moment when everything aligns, they can’t help but let go. After a searing first kiss, can friendship still be in the playbook? Their dynamic is so adorable. All the romantic/friendly gestures, small touches, and sweet nicknames will eventually lead to a sexy time every reader will be waiting for.

I jumped as Will’s hand brushed across my back.

“Hey, calm down. I’m not planning on groping you in here.” He shrugged, frowning. “I just wanted you to relax…you seem nervous.”

My shoulders fell, tension seeping from them as I shook my head. “I’m sorry, I am a little nervous. Today’s a big day for me.” I took a deep breath. If I wanted to clear the air, it was now or never. “And I’m sorry about last weekend. Things got a bit out of hand.”

Will leaned back against the desk, crossing his ankles. “No, you’re not the one who should be apologizing. I was out of line, and what I said wasn’t fair.” He shrugged. “I’m not saying I don’t find your reasoning frustrating, but if that’s how you really feel, I’ll back off.”

I nodded, finding it hard to meet his eyes. I hated the idea of him backing off but that was the very thing I’d asked him, no yelled at him, to do.

“I like you Em. We should be able to be friends. We get along well.”

I smiled, thinking how right he was. We did get along well. “Friends would be nice.”

He nodded. “Good, friends it is.”

“Yes, friends who refrain from dancing with each other.”

Will frowned. “We should still be able to dance together.”

I laughed. “Not the way you dance.” I felt my face go red just thinking about it. “I’m sorry, I’m just a little embarrassed about…you know…” my voice trailed off, unable to even consider verbalizing our last encounter. Innocent phrases like Texas or nightclub or dance floor felt like they should exist alongside other dirty words in some adults-only dictionary.

Will bent his head to meet my eyes. “If it helps, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about…you know…” His eyes ran down the length of my body and back up before widening deviously, and I had to lean against the desk to stop from sliding to the floor.

This man was going to destroy me and the worst thing was I was powerless to stop him.

Kim Carmody Headshot 1 Kim Carmody lives in Australia with her husband, in a sunny little part of Melbourne that she never wants to leave. Except for frequent trips to New York, she is happy to leave at least once a year for those.

She holds a Masters in Commerce Marketing and while she spent her younger years training to become a professional dancer, she somehow ended up working in the sports industry, where she met her now husband. Never a participant or spectator of sport growing up (she was too busy flitting around in a tutu), she has grown to appreciate, if not love many sports and eventually found herself writing about them too.

As an avid book lover from the moment she was introduced to The Babysitters Club as a seven year-old, Kim never expected to be able to call herself an author, but is beyond excited that she now can. Lexington and 42nd is her first novel.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW - Hawke by Sawyer Bennett

Hawke

The New York Times bestselling hockey series featuring the Carolina Cold Fury continues as the team’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

There is just something about second chances and sports. When Sawyer Bennett combines the two...it can be pretty amazing romance. Second chances are quite interesting because it gives the characters an opportunity to figure out their lives without the other. It can be heartbroken at first, especially if the break wasn't mutual. But overall, it gives the characters a chance to grow. If they are meant to be together, that second chance comes into play. And sports...I'm in it for the fit and sexy men who are in control, on and off the field/ice. ;)

Hawke Therrien was ready to make the move to the major leagues...hopefully with his girl by his side. Instead, when she breaks up with him out of the blue without an explanation, it left him frustrated and heartbroken. Of course there is a reason why Vale Campbell had to leave him that day. The day that will eventually make him a star. The thought of holding him back, didn't sit well with her. The only way to make him leave was to push him out in the worst way, saying the most hurtful words no man wants to hear. But, when they met again seven years later, it seemed like nothing changed, except the anger that lingered after the break.

Thoughts:

PLOT LINE - As two people unexpectedly meet again, a charge sparking when their eyes aligned, Hawke does anything he can to figure out what went wrong in the first place. This is a well-written story filled with kept secrets, slight twists, and a burning love that never went away. It was a very quick read because everything flowed well. Of course there a few bumps along the way when they try to smooth out the patches. Overall, second chances can help them find a happy ending they deserve.

CHEMISTRY - It was magnetic. If it was there the first time around, it's definitely there the second time around. Even stronger after the time apart. That pull Vale has on Hawke has him transfixed the moment he heard her name and locked eyes with her. You just can't wait for that first kiss, that first touch ever since everything fell apart.

Oh, Sawyer Bennett knows how to write those sexy times. Sometimes romances can be repetitive and makes you want skim it. But with Bennett, she builds that tension between Hawke and Vale. When all those misunderstandings are cleared up, the love that was there all along begins to grow.

It's very understandable how Hawke's trust issue with Vale. It's hard to build that trust with a person who broke his heart. You get that hesitancy from Hawke for opening to love again. And when that connection is still there after seven years, he might as well try to mend those broken bridges he thought were burned.

This is one of my favorite sports romance series by one of my favorite authors. When I saw the words  second chance, I had to read it. It's not my favorite of hers but it checked the marks I needed for a reuniting romance.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW & EXCERPT - Bennett by Brenda Rothert

Bennett
(On the Line, #2)

Brenda Rothert

Publication Date: March 15, 2016
Genre: Sports, Romance, Contemporary

Pre-order now:
Bennett Morse devotes his time to chasing two things: an NHL career and women. He’s the easygoing member of his three-man line on the Fenway Flyers, content to play the game he loves and soak up the female attention it brings – as long as it’s from a different woman each time. He learned the hard way that choosing only one leads to heartache.

Newly single attorney Charlotte Holloway finds just what she needs in Bennett – a sweet, sexy man to ease the burn of her recent breakup. One night is all she wants from the left winger who seems to have all the right moves. Soon circumstance draws her back to Bennett, and the sparks between them become a fiery blaze. But with the stakes high, will they risk it all and put their hearts on the line?

Read chapter one of Bennett here:

Sports romances are one of my absolute favorite books to read...especially hockey. There is  just something about hockey players that draws me to them. Maybe it's the way they're built or how an author describes them in action, on the ice. I just love it all! If hockey is your jam as well...you should go ahead and add the On The Line series to your to-reads list.

Bennett Morse is on top of his game as a left winger in the minor hockey league. Hoping to pursue his dream in playing in the big leagues, he'll just need to stay on track. As he celebrates another win at a local bar with one of his teammates, he doesn't know how one woman can change his life unexpectedly.

Charlotte Holloway is an assistant state's attorney, working her way up to be a prosecutor in juvenile cases. As a position opened up in the firm, she had a good feeling about it. But, the carpet just swept up from under her when she discovered her boyfriend secretly applied for the same position and took it away from her. So the crappy day lead her to a bar, where she'll meet a guy who will change her life unexpectedly.

Thoughts:

PLOT LINE - This story is just as cute as it is sexy. One night stands are suppose to be simple, right? Afterwards, you both can just leave without any contact or any form of a relationship. But if that one night was truly amazing, it maybe hard to forget. That one night can possibly change their lives. When life throws them together once more, maybe it's trying to tell them something. Maybe they should give it a shot.

CHEMISTRY - Bennett and Charlotte make an amazing pair. Not only is the attraction there, their new dilemma molds their friendship and helps turn it into something more. Charlotte is type who doesn't need a man to get things done but once she realizes that she may need Bennett more than she thinks, life can be so much easier. Even when she tries to stay away, there is just something magnetic about Bennett. And, it's not only for those sexy times either ;)

BENNETT - He is hands down my favorite character in this book. Not only is he a gentleman but he can be rough, protecting those who are close to him. When you get some news that you'd never thought you'd here, you expect a guy to react a certain way. But with Bennett...he is kinda perfect. Where did this guy come from? He says the right words and does the right things. He is pretty much any girl's dream guy if you want a guy who is considerate, well-mannered, handsome, and always puts everyone else's needs before his.

Overall, it was a fun and sexy quick read that will leave you wanting more.
